“The Akari Unfolded exhibition is the result of Valerie Maltaverne visit to the Noguchi Museum in 2016. This is where the idea of ​​a collaboration was born, whose aim would be to use her methodology to push Akari’s basic alchemy to the future by combining traditional craftsmanship and new technologies to produce a timeless design. The initial project was to create six lamps inspired by Akari’s values, as if Noguchi had access to today’s materials and technologies. Finally, YMER & MALTA has collaborated with six designers and more than twenty artisans with each distinct know-how. Overcoming many technical hurdles – YMER & MALTA pushed flax, metal, plexiglass, paper, resin, porcelain in several directions and produced twenty-nine lamps, which join the dazzling and everlasting expansion of the heritage of ‘Akari.”
